DIY Pom Poms + 3 Ways to Use Them This Holiday

As frugal moms we're always on the lookout for the perfect DIY additions to our decor - because really, that just means more time to sneak our pumpkin pie! Lucky for you, we have some adorable pom poms that are easy peasy & will make your kiddos squeal with joy! The possibilities are literally endless, but we've provided 3 fun ways to use them this holiday season, too!

Supplies:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • 4”x6” piece of cardboard
  • Headband & glue gun with sticks (optional)

How to Make Your Pom Poms:

1.) Cut a piece of yarn approximately 13 yards in length. 2.) Begin wrapping the yarn around the piece of cardboard until the entire length is securely wrapped around the cardboard. 3.) Gently remove the yarn from the cardboard and lay the wrapped piece of yarn vertically on a flat surface. 4.) Cut a piece of yarn at least 5 inches in length and place it underneath the wrapped piece of yarn, lying in a horizontal position and making sure that it is centered underneath the wrapped yarn.    5.) Tie the 5 inch piece of yarn in a tight double knot to secure the wrapped piece of yarn. Keep in mind: the tighter the knot, the better the pom pom will stay together. 6.) Using your scissors, begin cutting all of the loops of the yarn. At this point, you’ll begin to see the pom take shape! 7.) To shape the pom, begin trimming the edges so that the pom is circular. Tip: rotate the pom in a circular motion as you cut. This will help you cut more efficiently and will naturally cut the pom in a circular shape. 8.) Fluff the pom by holding the pom by its center and shaking it, then repeat step number seven until you are satisfied with the fullness and circular shape of the pom.

Use Them 3 Ways

1. How to Make a Pom Pom Garland

  • Make 8-15 poms poms (depending on the length of the garland) and set them aside.
  • Cut a piece of yarn the length of the garland you are wanting, adding an additional 1.5 feet to accommodate the length that will be used in tying the poms to the garland.
  • Lay out the string and poms poms in the desired order and mark with a marker where you want the poms poms to be tied to the garland.
  • Once you have marked where you want all of the poms tied on, set the poms aside and begin tying the poms one at a time using the garland string and tying in a double knot from left to right until all of the poms poms are secured.
  • rim the garland string as needed, hang and enjoy!

2. How to Create an Oversized Pom Pom Headband

  • Start by plugging in your hot glue gun so that you can glue the poms poms to the headband as soon as your pom poms are made.
  • Create your poms using the instructions at the beginning of the post.
  • Once your pom poms are ready, put the headband on the child identify the desired area you want to glue the poms poms on.
  • Once you’ve got confirmed placement, remove the headband with the pom poms and place a big dot of glue on the underside center of each pom and glue directly to the headband.
  • Apply gentle pressure to ensure that the poms are secure to the headband.

3. How to Top Your Presents with Oversized Pom Poms

  • Start by plugging in your hot glue gun so that you can glue the poms poms to the box as soon as your pom poms are made.
  • Create your poms using the instructions at the beginning of the post.
  • In the example pictured, we have tied four strings of yarn around the box to add a little more pizzazz before gluing on the pom poms. Once you have tied the yarn around the box, place a big dot of glue on the underside center of each pom and glue directly to the box.
  • Apply gentle pressure to ensure that the poms are secure to the box.
  • Place under your tree and enjoy!
